Why do you need to recruit internationally?

The academic community itself has always been global in its outlook. And higher education has always recruited internationally. But now a number of factors are coinciding which are making it even more important that universities and colleges can access the global talent pool when recruiting for academic and professional positions.

Demand is up

The global demand for higher education is rapidly increasing. Around the world a 25% increase in student numbers is predicted between 2004 and 2020 (UNESCO). In the US, the college age population is forecast to increase by 14.2% between 2000 and 2010. Developed economies are aiming to extend college education provision to a larger proportion of their young people, while China and India between them created over 6 million new graduates in 2005 alone.

Supply is down

Higher education in North America is heavily dependent on baby boomers. With estimates of 30% of academic staff being between 55 and 65 (60% between 45 and 65) retirement is going to create yet more vacancies to add to the ones resulting from increased demand. As always, deep-pocketed commercial organisations will entice some of your people away from higher education. And some of your existing talent may feel the call of the new as opportunities in HE open up around the world. Whichever way you look at it, universities and colleges are faced with doing more with less.

Compete to be best

Put simply, qualified candidates are going to have more choice of where they work and who they work for. And relying on your traditional, domestic markets to fill your vacancies is just not going to be enough in future. The most ambitious institutions are already moving in this direction. They are already thinking and behaving like global organisations because they know that thinking internationally, and treating the world as a single higher education talent pool, will enable you to:

  • Access the best people
  • Diversify your workplace
  • Weather the demographic storm
